Well we are know or heard of bettas raised at farms achieveing accelerated growth. Why? Also, is there any 'side efffects' from such forced paced growth?

Given out climate which provide a higher metabolisim to our fishes, farms are able to "force feed" their fishes whole year round and thus acheiving accelerated growth rate.
Thus we see our fishes in our part of the world growing much faster than their counterparts in other parts of the world where they do not enjoy our kind of tropical climate.
But there are also draw-backs ...
Fishes that grows up faster also die faster. This could be due to their protein rich diet that they are forced to consume. Thus we accelerated growth also comes shorter life-span.

Food is important but given adequate food intake, I noticed that bettas do need spae during the grow out stage in order that they grow larger , as that is the time when they ...eat alot, play alot, sleep alot. Adequate space ensures execise.
agree?

Woow. saw fishes sold by Straits at the roadshow. A couple of fishes in bags....1 month old accordingly as told. Well over 1 inch about 1.5 inch I think.......just wonder how much food they ve been eating and the kind of care they get!

Foo Hong,
If you are impressed with the growth rate of Straits, I am equally impressed with the rate of your frys growth which I've seen at the recent BCS Roadshow. Your 1week old frys are even bigger than my 2week old. Sigh! Now I have shifted them to a 2foot tank to enhance growth. Furthermore read somewhere that having some current created by the filter can also help. I also ensure the supply of Daphnia in the tank is not exhausted at any point in time.

Pump your fries with constant supply of daphnia. You will see rapid growth. Also start TW asap ... that is probably the best grwoth food around. Unless of cos u want to use live lavae which might land you in trouble with AVA.

just 1 cent: heard that keeping the water clean at all times promotes growth as well...don't overfeed, suck out the excrements every day....maybe add a little bit of fresh water daily in between full water changes?

Clean water keeps the active, hungry and do not fall ill, so they eat, rest , eat......
Just went to my dad's place to review some of my luvly jeveniles which I housed there....3 spawns...1.5mths old...ke keke... over 300 fishes.
Bcos hes retired he is so free he feeds them 5 times a day. My....almost doubled in size since I brought them there 2 weeks ago.
The water is changed every 2 or 3 days 100% due to the high amt of excrement.

i think if you have the luxury of time feeding little and often is very good. assuming each feeding is just sufficient there will be little waste, and INTUITIVELY i feel that the fish would be able to digest and assimilate small amounts of food more efficiently than if they were stuffed full once or twice a day...think their guts will be so bloated they won't really be able to process everything...so it all comes out from the other end...and the still-rich doo doo fouls-up the water quickly. hmm...but then again this is just based on guesswork...got no deep understanding of the inner workings of betta =)

According to Atison, bettas have short intestines. ie, food goes in n come sout quickly. thats why sometimes if you overfeed with live bloodworms, the same worms is passed out undigested. The food given must be easily digestable and nutrition quickly absorbed. enuf n often is the key to me.

Reviving this thread again.
Lets all share how we each hasten the growth rate of our fries. its both a good n bad thing, bad bcos it ages faster thereafter, but good if you are working yr lines n needs to see reasults quick.
what I intend to throw for discussion is how to we each hasten growth rates, diff methods/foods.....MOST IMPORTANTLY.....without harming the health of yr fishies. eg, you dont put food 24 hrs in teh jar w/o water change. soon betta will be like sumo wrestler.
So ?

So quiet ah? I'll share with what I've been doing. Only done two spawns so far. So, I am the real amateur here. Pls tell me if I'm doing things right or wrong.
Day3 after hatching-Daphnia all the way to about 3 weeks.
Thereafter, interspersed with Tubifex and Daphnia till about 4wks. After that Tubifex all the way....
At week 6, still too small to take pellet food.
Btw, my largest fry at end of week 3 is about 0.8cm long. Is that too small or considered average?
Any comments, Betta Lovers?
Warmest regards,
Marcus

Really agree with the conclusions drawn by Chen Han and Foo Hong regarding the small-and-often feed approach to faster growth.
The question is whether it would improve the eventual size of the fish. Just to relate an experience of mine. I keep a pond (for my non-breeders) and the fish in there grow significantly slower than those I have in the individual jars. Now at 7 months, they are visibly smaller than their jarred brothers. Environmental factors do count.

well, space to me plays a big part.
I had 2 different spawns at a same time and the spawn size is about the same.
But one spawn is in a 2ft tank while the other is in a 1.5ft tank. After 1 mth, the fries in the 2ft tank grew till like 1.5-2cm big while the fries in the 1.5ft tank grew till 1.5cm and lesser

Yes Lyon, you are right is your observation. I would normally split my fries at 1 week if I find that there are too many of them. If you cluster them they tendn to grow slowly.
