Is it good to have different competition formats? Why or why not?

Myron, that is the most subjective question ever asked. It will be really difficult to have just one format really, because views and preferences do differ. Some see rarity as the main contending issue, others look at beauty; but there are also others who would consider the ferocity angle. I would on the other hand suggest looking at the betta from the angle of its creators. The HM and the CTs were obviously created for beauty, but because they are fighting fish, a betta that cannot flare will definitely lose out. But it is only natural that they tend to be less aggressive than say plakats. Then comes the next question of points to be awarded for each triat. This is again another subjective issue. Followed by yet other subjective issues like "standards". I would suggest that it would be better to indicate a standard guideline of each category of betta so that competitors would be aware of what the judges are looking out for in each category of betta.

if it's different organisers then unavoidable loh. nothing good or no good because different organisers different views. if same organisers then preferably the same format unless there is some update.

Personally, I would prefer a common standard and format that follows the international convention. Unless there is a major disagreement amongst what is internationally accepted. In which case, I would propose that a new standard and format be stated in writing and communicated. The rationale for the change should also be clearly articulated. A good example of such a deviation that occurred was the Global Halfmoon Breeders Club as articulated here:

Even in the example above, they are still using the IBC standards to define "faults" and format (all betta contenders are laid out and judged).
Otherwise, it would be akin to shooting in the dark for breeders.

Yes but that is basically just the HM group.Quite expected since HM was a western creation. Don't really think they know enough about the CTs or plakats/imbellis category though.Even IBC appears lacking in this area.

Fully agree, so we really need standards in this areas too. Otherwise, different personal standards would lead to different CTs and plakats / imbellis developed. It is imperative that adequate standards for such areas be developed for breeders.

But we digress. Assuming that in the future when these standards are present for CTs and / or plakats / imbellis , does it make sense to have different competition formats?

Shhhh! keep it down Myron, Hsu is after me for the CTs. I am the guilty party... but still waiting for inspiration.

There is no age limit, but there are size limits. Males' bodies should be at least 1.5 inches and female bodies should be at least 1.25 inches.
