Have. Even those adults I manage to capture. The bettas really love them. Problem is finding more of them without alarming the authorities.

Bettas love them, I'm worried about them!
Had a spawn of orange fries (not too many hatched, about 30+) during AGM period. 3 days after the eggs are hatched and fries free swimming, I removed the father. As the spawn was done in my 2 feet tank and without cover, saw may larvaes in the tank. On the 4th day, all my fries are gone and the larvaes have grown 3 times the size! Non of my fries dead bodies are found in the tank bottom, so I suspect the larvaes must have a great meal of Orange Fries, lol!
Feeling frustrated, put back all my 3 weeks old Ext. Red. fries and finally they have had their great larvaes meal too!

Woow thats called...recycling!
Dont think Mossies attack fries. prob the fries died and they feed on the decaying stuff. Mind you mossies are never always clean, depends where they are found. I once collected some which were found in a a moina culture tub. Fed to a steel DTM. Died in next 12 hrs!

I think there are some questions on where frozen mosquito larvaes can be found in Singapore.

Can get them for Straits Aquarium , seletar west farmway 1.
Its near jalan kayu roti prata shop. They are quite a reputable farm and i guess the quality for the frozen larvaes can be assured ?

I tried frozen mosquito larvae before. Seems to contain a lot of empty larvae husks as well and usually the freezing process seems to disintegrate the larva body so that when you feed, it falls apart and messes up the water. The water becomes dirty and murky real fast.

My experience exactly. Gave up and threw them away as they dirty the water fast.

Well the life ones are the best. During our trip to bangkok{see Samuel photo in the forum under general 'Trip to bangkok with Gene Lucas)the first farm we visited that farmer fed mosquito larvae to his bettas. These bettas were in whiskey bottles ,these bottles were 3 quarter full with water and you could see that some bottles had 10 to 12 uneaten mosquito larvae it seem to me this does not affect the bettas even you over feed them. You can't find a fish that is sick or cramp fin. I randomly pull out many bottles to check those bettas. Many of these bettas were about 3inches or so. What's more the did water change about every 4 to 5 days if i remember correctly.I took measurement from the water of a tanked betta that i took home. The did not change the water when it was packed neither did i till i reach home(2days in plastic bag) and the mesurement is ph 8.4/ kh 20 /gk 16 /no2. 1/no. 0 (using a tetratest 5 in 1)so it seems to me nitrate and nitrite are quite low. I think feeding live mosquito larva helpes.
But it is not conclusive as i only tested on one sample and it not a
whiskey bottled fish[dr].
In my younger days I use to feed my bettas with mosquito too i only
change water every week or never(just add water).Well that is another story.

hi, i just fed them with frozen mosquito larvaes bought from Straits. Quite good quality and my two bettas are njoying it. normally i will throw a portion of it into a cup with water and feed them one by one from it. i think need to spend quite some time but it will at least make sure that the water do not turn murky or dirty that fast.

i think Arising at AMK also sells M.Ls. agreed with eve, this way of feeding was taught by one of the workers at straits. of course, it is more troublesome if you have many mouths to feed. my problem lies in that my fellas reject "once alive now dead" foods *SIGH*
hey vincent, when you feed MLs when you were younger, did you manage/harvest them yourself? or other means?

Hi Alex,
Well my father had a farm breeding lily (dwarf Gourami) and plakat(then short tail fighters)from germany and other types of fishes .Do you think in the mid 1960s who cares what you breed to feed your fish(then no MOE)and we got a pond with a stream running past our property. My grandmother and the neighbour rear pigs guest where all the waste go to? In the stream you will find tubificid worms in the pond daphnia and also M.Ls. But still we needed more supply to feed all the fishs. If all of us had this kind of place and environment now we will have the rest of the betta world a run for their money.
Also in the early 1970s i kept vailtails and fighters you could get the M.Ls from some suppliers or go to friends place and catch them.
Those frozen M.Ls from straits are good the trick is not to overfeed your betta with it and follow their instruction carefully(as what Eve had posted).

Don't really understand. You mean throw a portion of the M.Ls into the cup and put the fish into the cup as well? Or use the cup to wash the larva before feeding the fish in the fish tank?

hahaha.. vincent you are probably right.. will be earning loads. provided the authorities gives the green light. :)
huat hian,
no no.. what eve meant was you put the m.ls into a small container.. the m.ls will diffuse.. from there you single out the m.ls one by one and feed your fellas accordingly. you are right too in your latter statement. don't worry about accuracy, i taught eve this method.. the strait's worker passed this knowledge to me directly.

Huat Hian,
will keep a lookout for you if going to straits again.. anyway, please note that the m.ls come in frozen form hence, they cannot be kept for too long outside.

Brandon, I don't usually give frozen unless I am away and my maid runs out of live food. Live Blood worms are good but treat them first with MB.

IMO,I think Mosquitoe larva is the best form of food for bettas. Coz It's high protein and very little fat. The problem is that in Singapore, onli can find frozen ones, I find very troublesome as have to wash, and sommore there are sometimes alot of foreign particles in it.There is also alot of dust and broken ML in it. Putting it into the water tends to cloud it a little and result in alot of residue settling at the bottom.
I've since change to feeding Frozen bloodworms. Just wash and feed.
So far i think onli in thailand i see before. There sells all kinds of food for fishes. Live dapnia, Adult BBS, all type of worms and even LIVE ML!!!!

Thanks for the tip. But here in Singapore, it is an offence (with fines) to have mosquitoes breeding in your place.
