With the recent queries on those fin rots, blood on tail, etc.. Why not have a talk on Fish Disease and Treatment?

Chris, I'm looking forward to the next gathering too! It could be at one of the members' house (in conjuction with his open house - I woulld have accepted during my last open house, if I had read the exchange between Dr Hsu & you(?) earlier) or the common venue being proposed. Each member can also bring some fish for sale / exchange.
cheers, sy

Yep .. it has been awhile since we have any BCS program. Not blaming the committee ... just looking forward to the next BCS outing to see more betta.
But understand that there isn't many betta farm to go to ... even if there is ... they are not as large as Straits and Ah San. Mostly small timers and most have given up betta and took up Luo Han instead.
How about an outing to Malaysia farms ... e.g. Kulai area. Can self drive ...
Heard that they have Luo Hans there (subsidary in Jln Kaya) ... but not too sure whether they have betta or not. Any one have contacts??
With Best Regards,
Samuel Phan

Hi Sam,
Lou Han is basically killing everything else in the fish hobby - even Ah San's not doing bettas for the time being....
Our next event is scheduled for May 25th at 3pm. Venue is yet to be assigned as we do hope to get Bishan CC to hold our events. If not succesful by then, we'll have to look for a temp venue.
Topic of the talk will be "Common diseases of Bettas and their treatment" or something to that effect. Will be presented by Dr Frederic Chua. Following the talk, which should be roughly 1/2 hr or so, he will have a look at some fish that members will bring to demonstrate/comment about the symptoms and talk through it and arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan.
We are also going to suggest to members to bring their fish for display/sale/swap etc and just hang around to chit-chat after the talk.
More when things are finalized......

Li Chieh

Hi Hsu,
Thanks for the update ... it is definitely a day to look forward to.
Thanks for the effort.
And Luo Han??? Yep ... seems like everyone is into it now and it is probably much more profitable to sell them than Betta.
But hang on there ... betta will have its day one day =)

I really cant stand this Luo-han fish.
L = Lousy [ name of fish ]
U = Un-natural looking[ protuding head ]
0 = Over-priced tilapia
H = Hostile attitude and Hard-to-handle[ but doesnt flarr like betta ]
A = Awful strain names [ look at those strain names, eg 'xxx monkey']
N = No reason to buy this fish!

Well, if it's 25 May, then there are 3 more weeks to go. Should be good since it coincide with the school holidays. Maybe it's time to give it some publicity.

Certainly glad to see an event coming up - and the talk on diseases will be enlightening. Should "sell the event" on Bettahan to drive up interest and membership, but how to control people who'll come but not sign up?
As for me, will certainly be there since I havn't met up with most of you since my last open house sale (unless something unexpected turns up), and try to bring some fish for show/sale/exchange! cheers, sy

Hi Chris, pity you're not available on 25th (still need to settle the account with you.) I've been busy at work & trying to spawn some orange & others - April has been tough for me because of the hot / wet / hot weather. Late April onwards have been better as I've managed a few spawns. Maybe I'll start a topic on whether hot or cold, or steady temperatures are better for spawning.
cheers sy

Hi SY,
Seems like the weather do determine the spawn success rate ...
Same thing ... I was slapped with a few failed attempts in March/April ... but late April was good as all pairs that I threw in all spawned after some coaxing.
I think it is good idea to discuss on this topic further.
