foo hong,
regarding bike for yur son hor,
u must state budget den can recommend...
but if he is just a beginner, i recommend getting him a cheap polygon ($100-$200) mtb as a starter...den if he really like cycling, can slowly upgrade to better bike

ic yecora... is really a below average frame no offense on this. not worth upgrading on parts..should save enough money before getting a good frame + good parts... i tell u this cause when i started my biking hobby.. i too like you got a lousy frame.. and thus + the upgrading..and soon upgrading the whole frame + parts and ended up on a bigger budget... that what i tells my frens nowadays.. if u r really going to get into "biking" do save up money for a good frame with ok parts first before on the upgrading scheme, thus u will save quite alot.. instead of the other way round.
sorry for my whinings..
cheers.

i think the design is secondary for trail..most impt is quality of the bike and its characteristics.

since its onli the tyres/wheels and brakes that are giving u problems, i think u can get them changed and it will cost u abt $500 max...thats if u decide to get XTR brakes and very good rims and tyres...
Ong Ginyew
1st June 2003, 10:03 AM
ok...Thanks for d info...i might b considering oil brakes. rims and tyres???not soo sure yet. its been a long time ive got into bikes...need ur help liao....dun wan to get con by em.
Jonathan_Tan
1st June 2003, 06:31 PM
i would suggest getting shimano XT brakes if yur on a tight budget...and rims i not so sure...
if u feeling generous, go for shimano XTR brakes...
difference is in the weight...
Ong Ginyew
3rd June 2003, 01:10 AM
shimano quite ex leh.....how much huh?
XTR also..how much??? diff between 2.
VinceTan
3rd June 2003, 06:12 PM
xtr is a higer gearing for competition purposes. Getting a shimano deore will proof just as good. And the price line is also cheap. Am using xtrs because i like big gearing hence the speed and abit posing la :x
Actually infact avid brakes are better, and many model to choose from. Their lower end are cheaper but still good to perform. rim can get mavic 517 and tyres you can get panaracer firexc .
Guess with these tune up it will only cost you around 300+...
But still for the rims and tyres you can choose a cheaper ones...
Ong Ginyew
3rd June 2003, 06:35 PM
sounds gud to me but alittle over d buget....for me its 250 or less. above tat i "pok" already.
im onli using for long distant rides.....not many stunts.
VinceTan
4th June 2003, 12:38 AM
250 below i guess shud be no prob, but a good brake is a must. it might just save ur life one day doesn't need to be that higher end. can chk out avids brakes. you can give alex rims a try + panaracer tires. shud be below the cost you are asking about..
It's better for you to go to those kinda "wellknown" shops to ask around and they will comment more for ur budget..
then maybe u can post the parts here + cost, and we can further comment on them :D
