View Full Version : Tricks To Breed An Old Pair?

Hi Guys,

Any tricks that you guys can share?

I am trying to breed a very old pair of cambodian HM which is a gift from Lin. The are gorgeous but the age is catching up on them and spawning seems abit too challenging for them.

The male seems to old to build nest anymore and the chasing game is too taxing too.
As for the female ... doesn't seems too active too.

Any advices will be greatly appreciated ...

With Best Regards,
Samuel Phan

One way is to starve the buggers cos hunger make them slightly more active in that they will want to move their butts to search for food!

Doesnt work always as old fishes are weaker and suseptible to illness easily and most do not do well after recovery.

Alternatively, you can bring them here if you have given up hope!

Hmmm ... if all things fail ... then really have to put those buggers in better hands just to ensure that their bloodline is continued.

Will let ou know the outcome ... because I have my second attempt using the Old Cambodian HM with the Straits female.

Also ... try the Extended Red CT Pair that I brought to the gathering on Saturday. Looks promising ...

Will keep you guys posted.

Hi Guys,

Just an update.

The Cambodian Red HM attempt failed.
The Extended Red CT attampt also failed.

But was successful with a :
- Steel Blue DTM X Royal Blue STF spawn
- Marble Plakat HM STM X HM STF

Also was successful with the Straits Extended Red pair but abondaned because the spawn is too small.

With Best Regards,
Samuel Phan

Sam, What happen da red?

This period seems to be a red month.
Gotta...2 small red spawns abt 1.5 mths now. Just had another spawn 3 days old. will be doing 3 more this month. hard time for red daddy as he is seeing a different partner every week or other week

Roy , the Ah san red STF/DT + pineapple geno gave me a 50/50 camb red/ext red spawn. She is on the queue again , 3rd in the waiting list, for the breeding tank

Am painting the town red!

Really???

Then I have got to try my Reds again.
Got 3 pair to try ...

But today will be trying a MG pair.
Will release the female tonite if the male builds a good nest.

Also this morning released a blue spawn to the grow-out tank ...

I think at least got 800 pieces ... but not to sure about their finnage outcome.

Will release another marble spawn maybe tonite to the grow-out tank too ... ... another probably 1000.

But my ultimate aim is still to spawn the Reds and the MGs.

Speaking of successful, I ve got 8 spawns betw 3 days to 3 weks old,,hhahahha.

No pineapples from that girl. Goes to show the male I used[straits] doesnt carry yelllow. Just a few 'rotten papayas' that have a bit of reduced reds[think these are the 'pineapple' carriers]. Also the full red coloure sibling has a drakish red tone, as opposed to the preferrd chilli red type. Anyway, the reds[colour wise] from the same male x Ah San dark yellow STF near hm, gave very bright red fishes...yippy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After the AGM, they will be F2ed immediately. Roy, what do we do with the 'apache female'?

So Mr Phan, have your old hacks spawned yet?

Old hack refused to perform the ritual ... =(
have to feed him to Viagra soon ...

But now have a few other spawns in hand ... will try him again very soon when the rest din turn out well.

PS: Trying another 4 spawns now ... Red, Orange, CT, Pastel.

better spawn quickly as Roy says...rainy season may not last. Its true, warm weather makes the bettas[ and us ] lethargic.

Maybe the viagra be with you...ooopppss I meant your reds!

Another thing you could try....did this once before and worked but not sure if it will always work.

vitamins!...yes have you all had your doctor advised you to take supplements? Opps not qualified ...should leave this to Dr Hsu to comment. Anyway had this 'old hack' once. This male is so sloppy, I once dozed hsi water with vitamins containing Vit B-complex and Vit-E. He was more active therafter and within this period of shortlived activity I actually managed to breed him. although thereafter he was back to his 'drug-addict lokk a like' syndrome! hhehehe

Actually this is what I have been thinking of doing ... but din try.
Might probably use strong ketapang water to try to re-activate the bugger.

Hi
Sam,

Tat's what I did to re-activate the turquoise male I got from Alvin last time. It was too old to spawn and refused to blow bubble nest..
So I did a concentrated tonic of " Chinese teh Bi leaves " ( smiliar to Ketapan leaves too... ) Pour the tonic into the water.. and .. ta da... The male blowed a bubble nest....
But the female refused to spawn. :(

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for confirming that ... really wanted urgently to spawn that bugger before the "Cow-Head-Horse-Face" take him away.

Will try it maybe tonite ... =)

Hi all, why is it not advisable to breed old fish (probably a year & above)? is it because they will not spawn? or die half way? or what?
[ks]
Generally, they are more difficult to spawn.

thanks myron

i've been trying for nearly 3 weeks and everything seems pretty fine. male build huge bubble nest & pretty active. only problem is that he keeps flaring & chasing the female away when she's near the nest & she end up 'slacking' at one corner.

i'll try again ...really difficult

just a thought - if the male has a big heavy tail - he may benefit from a "haircut"
Trim the tail so he does not get so tired trying to impress the female.
Cheers, J

I have tried to breed old bettas before. One thing I notice is that you can try to introduce either a younnger male or female to the line. This method works for me

dont think i dare to cut his tail...i have no experience & its too scary for me :P
plus its a pretty old fish. is it painful? only if fish can talk...

Plakats shouldn't be bothered by the weight of the tail - only this big old HM seem to have this issue.

Hi Chang Yuan,

you are not alone in this.. i'm having problems breeding my old pks as well. the line has no choice but to stop at F3. trying different pairing may work, if you have additional fellas.

this is the dilemma i face as well.. no worry, perserverance and flexibility should see us through.
