I know this is discussed umpteen times before.
Tetra's label indicate amongst other things the presence of vitamins. Other aspects of it are similar for both. Obviously I am not aware that Ketapang will come with vitamins[otherwise I ll start eating them myself!].
So did any scientist found out if the vitamins is actually added? or comes with whatever tree that tetra used in their extraction?

FH, I read that ketapang extract does not contain any vitamins but quite a few type of mineral and acids. I guess they have embeded some form of stable vitamins.
Can't even find any patents on their products, what to do. no info at all.

Wah, Kenn: you're so sly - check patents to find out what is in medications!:D Never thought of that!!
Probably the ingredients are so simple and cheap that they dare not put in a patent - too easy to make slight changes and have a competing product!

Actually I am experimenting with Tetra and so far results seem good. so wanna see if its was the vits.
What minerals in ketapang Kenho?

can't recall where I keep the research report. The minerals are mainly minor trace elements in very small quantity but the acids which has those healing agent. Those long long dunno what name acids. For vitamins to be mix in acids, erh ... got to ask doc liao, most are not stable enough to be in acidic solution. Actually for tetra blackwater extract, i doubt it's ketapang. Should be black peat moss extract.
Doc, patents also not easy to find leh, becos companies registered under their subsi labs or scientists.

if vits are diff to keep in acids, then isnt their label a load of bxxxsxxx?
Dr Hsu

The acidity of these organic acids (tannic acid and humic acid, plus others likely) is not very strong - think of citric acid in oranges...I think it is even less acidic than that and yet oranges still have vitamins...Also probably not straight vitamins but complexed etc to be more stable.
Anyway, understand that most vits are not light stable so after you put it in the water, starts to degrade....

maybe i shoudl try n squeeze some orange juice into my tank of culls n see what hampens! [eb]
But this ketapang is really a good 'alternative'[or maybe its wghat you shld have]. and its free! I have a shopping basket full of that[eb]

wat i know is that the Ketapang leaves give out some kind of
chemical (i may call it) to condition the water.
but i not sure wat is the friendily chemical ;<

2 forms of acids found in ketapang leaves, fruit and roots are very potent antioxidants. Aik Seng, it's not friendly if overdose. Scientifically proven to damage liver ( lab rats test ).
FH, probably added with very stable Vit C derivatives (antioxidant) and Vit B complex into the acidic solution. How about looking at the label and see if there are any of those printed.

Finally found my PH electrode. Turned the PH meter on and measured a tank of day old water LIGHTLY TINITED with ketapang, n I mean light...very.
PH measured 6.83. Straight tap water at my home is approx 7.5 to 7.6
So this ketapang thg is fairly acidic eh [cnf]. of cos I shld mention that the electrode has not benn calibrated for a while.

there is a taiwan brand selling in some lfs. price 130. it's a probe type with digital reading in a separate unit.
ph pens cheaper, range from 100++ to low 50.

Which is why I think BW and ketapang are totally different animals! :D
ketapang though seems to be more user friendly. You all can ask Derrick, Edwin and Vicent who came over yesterday. My grow out tanks are so dark like tea-O!
All got ventrals and the necessary ability to reproduce [eb]

Hmmm...if that can happen to offsprings, does it mean conditioning water with Tetra BW would cause my bettas to have some defects[cnf]

qn here. does black water reduce the level of ammonia?
black water makes the water acidic while ammonia is more alkaline.
in this sense, does it balance off?
quote:Originally posted by MarcusRoyce
frankly i dont think it works that way.
neutralizing a property does not eliminate its existence.
i think so.I am with Marcus. You see, ammonia is toxic to fish. So it must be removed or converted to something less harmful. More on maintenance of bettas on the following thread: http://www.bettaclub.org.sg/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1531

Just for your information, Ocean Nutrition will launch during Aquarama a new product based on Wild Almond leaf extract, and as easy to use as Tetra's Blackwater (blackwater is based on peat). It will also contain a Yucca extract, amongst some other things. The Yucca extract will bind the amonium in the water and force it to flocculate. This way the amonium is really extracted from the water and the resulting clumps will be laying on the bottom of the tank. This product is designed for the Betta keeper, but can also be used for fish transportation. It will be readily available in the shops after Aquarama.
