Once a day for adults, except when I am conditioning them for breeding, they would be fed twice a day. Fries are also fed twice a day.

- 2 time a day for all.
- Adults fish will get what is just enuf for them.
- Fries will have excess food always in the tank for them to feed round the clock. 3 times on weekends when I am free.

Bettas are generally acknowledged to be carnivourous fish and based on my knowledge of carnivores, they do not eat every day. They only eat on those days when they are able to catch food. Hence, the fact that we feed our fish daily is quite abnormal in a certain sense and carnivores sometimes go on a voluntary fast to balance this.

My point is this: Suspect that to a certain extent, carnivores such as bettas are able to suppress their growth based on the availability of prey at a particular time in their lives. I am not talking about complete food deprivation spreading over more than two weeks of course as this would lead to death, even in the wild.

According to the following link, more feeding = faster growth = possible shorter life span, and less feeding = slower growth = possible longer life span.

http://www.bettasrus.com/bcorner/growth_recipe.htm

I feed my adults 3 freeze-dried bloodworms (or 3 pellets) every 12 hours.

They have grown so accustomed to the timing that they 'jump' when I approach them during feeding time.

Twice a day for adults ...

Ad libitum feeding is does not always translate to faster growth. Basic animal husbandry would teach that. Once a day or every other day is the frequency of feeding for my adults. With fry, depending on the availability of food. I usually dump in infusoria water and daphnia into the tank and see them again after 2 weeks (after hatch) that is if I have lots of daphnia. If not, fed once a day, big meal with live food with the assumption that they would just get what they need when they need it/want it.

Our plakat is only 6 months old and we feed him 2 or 3 times a day and siphon out any uneaten food. Our betta is less than a year old I think and we feed him twice a day, sometimes three times a day. As they get older we need to cut down to once or twice a day. We keep an eye on their bellies to make sure they are not getting fat.
