OK, we all know that ketapang helps our fish by conditioning water, ....etc
Methylene blue inhibits baterial growth etc
Aquarisol kills some ext parasites etc.
Does anyone know what happens if you mix one or more of these??
Will the binding effect of tannins etc cancel out the effects of methlene blue, aquarisol?
Will we be wasting time and effort mixing them??
Not sure anyone will have the definitive answers but personal experiences will be helpful.
Regards,
Li Chieh

Just a warning. Repeated observation and experiment.
Unknown precipation occurred when
1. soft water with malachite green
2. ketapang with formulin ( both in liquid form )
3. ketapang with malachite green ( both in liquid form )
fish tends to stay at water surface, frequent opening of gill plate.
Fins not clamp but lost appetite.
I think O2 level dip fast in these mixture. Brownish suspended particles.
pH dip fast to 6.0 upon mix from 6.8.

Whats this formulin?
It also seems all the observation has to do with mala green?

In old bottles of formaldehye, you can sometimes see a white precipitate. This is paraformaldehyde and is toxic! Perhaps this happens when formalin is mixed with ketapang??

I thought that formalin/formaldehyde would become paraformaldehyde at a higher pH or a higher temp, or both?

Xiao Yi, simple english for you ....
Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas with a strong pungent odor.
The aqueous solution formalin is 37-40 percent formaldehyde.
Common uses include tissue fixing and preservation, disinfection, and fumigation.
Formaldehyde is a suspected human carcinogen. Suspect cause to Nasal Cancer.
Exposure to formaldehyde vapors can be irritating to the eyes, nose, and upper respiratory tract.
Contact eyes will cause blindness. On expose wound will burn.
For aquarium use, 1 drop per 1000L. Mainly to destroy parasites and worms. Pest control purpose. Due to it's extremely potency, some have switch to another type of chemical - Diflubenzuron, instead of formulin.
Simple enough Xiao Yi ?
Dr, the white precipitate should be some form of stabliser used to prevent it from turning back to gaseous state.

Formalin should not have any precipitate. Never seen any in those I have.....read about the ppt from somewhere, can't remember where now but I think in one of those fish med texts somewhere.....Getting old:D

Gary,
Don't know where to buy ketapang leaves in the East[cnf], but the East is full of Ketapang trees! Try along Jln Eunos, Still Road, PIE area; also Coastal Highway - these roads are lined with ketapang trees - just walk along the road and pick up as many as you want!
