3 to 5 months in my opinion. At this age, full of eggs and willing to spawn, can even take continual spawnings.

Yes, as the heading applies to female. 3 months for female is a good starting age to spawn especially for those very fertile ones. But spawning it with her siblings always give me a problem. The male may not be too ready yet at 3 months or unable to wrap round the sister, since both are of the same age.

So the best is still to spawn back to the Father. But also sometimes the father may be a bit too big to wrap too as the daughter may slip off the body during the wrapping resulting in no eggs being released.

Frustrating!

Along with age, I thot it is also worth mentioning about the size of the female. In order to get a very good spawn or better chance of a successful spawn, I noticed that the female shld be abt 20% smaller than the male. Why? Try curling your index finger of one hand around the thumb of yr other hand

I agree with Chris ...
sometimes the males are simply too young to be spawned despite that they have been building large bubblenest and exceptionally active when seeing a female.

But I think they are still too "Green" for any action.

IMO ... 4 months is a good age for male betta to be used for spawning. Anything younger is difficult.

Agree?

Another aletrnative way to tell is 'she is of the ripe age' is to see if she does drop eggs. When she can do that, she has reached puberty !

I spawned young females before (probably btw 3 n 4 months) and comparing those spawns with spawns using fully matured females (those large ones), the difference in size of the eggs and fries is very significant! Those young females produce minute eggs...and I got to strain eyes to find the fries. The big females eggs like pebbles (ok I exagerrate) and the freshly hatched fries equivalent to 4 day old fries from small females.

young male tends to eeat eggs tooi always buy some lousy female those $1 type and spawn with the "virgin" male so it won't eat up the egg when i spawn with good female[|)]

jus out of curiosity, when u manage to get a succeful spawn with the $1 female, do u cull the whole batch since the female is poor quality?

FH is correct in his observation about females. That is why I would usually seperate the females from the males at an early age of 1.5 mths. I feed them differently too. Females no TBX only males. If left to nature, have you noticed that females tend to be bigger than males in the same spawn at 2mths?
