Yellows are my latest craze.

How is the spawn with the awesome Ah San yellow coming along??

I also wu liao so just spawned a yellow male I picked up from Ah San at the farm visit (from his red spawn) to a yellow female from HK that a friend gave me....now a few days old. Don't know why I did it 'cause the female didn't have good finnage/splits..... Think it's because I needed to know that I can still spawn fish after many recent failures

Ah San s yellow is my darling fish. She is the only female that lives in a Nisso tank.:) She is really commando trained, old but strong and nice colour, not clear cambodian yellow type but opaque yellow ...175 caudal....yippy!

She was paired with the winning STM yellow in the competition, courtesy of Sam Awyong. i dont expect high no. of good fishes tho bcos the male has an inproportionate body/fin. also, tail is too long and saggy. over 1 month now..throwing cambodian reds and yellows.

The same yellow female is spawned to an extended red. Badly bitten till she had velvet from stress. still not fully recovered but when she do, her next boyfriend will be a light yellow STM/DT from Curtis Low, whcih is a little smaller.....Hopefully she pulls thru and makes my dream come true.

I am sure she will be become a fairy after life!

well just an update on my 2nd yellow spawn. 2 yellows from diff lines gave me this rediculous 50% camb red/50% yellow spawn.

As hsu has said before, there may very well be a Y1 and Y2 gene. otherwise, where in the world does teh camb red come from. if one says its yellow/cam red geno, then it also doesnt make sense cos there are far too many cam reds here. time to throw away mindley s law

Daddy is the one entered by Sam Awyong at the BCS competition. Mummy is from Discus Breeding Farm.

As expected many did nt turn out good in form due to the male. But such is the case with outcrosses. The next generation hope to see some throwbacks towards the mummy 's side, which is a nice 170 delta in deep yellow.

BTW, I see that you are a junior member according to the forum records. What is your name.

Hi Foo Hong,

Actually most pple will start off as "Starting Member" unless they belongs to the committee ... it is only through their number of forum postings that they are awarded titles like "Junior Member", "Senior Member", "Shi Fu" and such.

Btw ... welcome ... "Uncle Junkin" ... it would be nice to have more pple like you in this forum. Welcome to the family.

With Best Regards,

Foo Hong,

Is your darling Ah San yellow female still around??

Have a male yellow (one of the yellow offspring from his last red batch) that has the same kind of nice yellow. He's quite big but can't say too much about his fins as he was kept outside whilst growing up and thus did not develop well (great color so maybe outdoor environment with lots of natural algae is good for yellows??)

Was thinking that a cross between the two might give good colored fish with good finnage?

Ai Ya...you shld have said earlier. I used her so many times until she is now a 'betta fairy'...now

She was breed to the following before:
1. Curtis Low's male - about 300 to 400 fries......finnage sucks. None usablefor F2
2. Sam Awyong's winning yellow[peter's line]......50/50 cam red/yellow. Only about 5 fishes considerable.
3. Straits red - very small spawn, less than 30. looks like 60 cam red/yellow and 40% ext red. still small cant see well.

Also tried her to my Royal Blue to get some multis > big mistake. she lietrally became retarded after the battering.

I do have a Ah san red female we can consider. She was bred from[according to Roy] red x pineapple so there is some yellow genes in it. Nice branching and should throw back a few yellows.

Yellow spawn #2 in my history turn out equally dissapointing. Good colour, great mama, but boyz n gals look like anything but close to their near HM mama

Just F2 one pair today.....Cant be just lost in one generation. Gotta have a Hm yellow. Anyone else breeding yellows?

Btw ... saw some yellow females at Tiong Bahru market. Good size and very healthy ... dunno who is the home breeder that actually released those yellow females.

It was selling at 80cents each.

I took a look at the finnage and find them acceptable even if they were to cost $10 each.

Will go down later to take a closer look. Maybe can find good buy from the batch.

Sam,

I wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft pole! Females lie! They always look great - nice and clean, decent delta tails, some even with good splits - but the may not pass on their traits. Worse still, you don't know the background of the fish.

I think for females it is even more important to know the background or you will often be taking one step back (minimum) in your breeding program.

Of course, if you have nothing else better to do with your time and money......:)

Point taken.
Actually bought 2 pieces ... will only use them as test spawns if there is any.

Reason because my most recent 2 spawns is going to keep me very busy again. :)

Arrrr you bot?.....check carefully before you breed. Opps I meant breed the bettas not yourself. Once they turn from padi grain to cooked porridge its too late.

BTW, sometimes young plakat females are difficult to tell. May teh force be with you[r bettas].

Anyway ... wun breed them lah ...

Have too many spawns in hand to try and test spawns.

But my MG spawn ... I think eggs all eaten by the male.

Progress of yellow line . F1....at least one male turn out almost 170 delta with a reasonable proportion overall. None of the others were anything near in terms of quality. Well at least I got 1 fella to work with from here. Never knew yellows were so difficult to work with. Will try to fix the strain. Hes the one you guys saw at the AGM...cool?

Yeh, as shown on the photos! Is it with tertiary splits, or more? Couldn't see properly.

Hes got 1-to-8 ray branching in some sets of rays, but not every ray.

Also, there is only one female worth using.....shes got 1-to-4 rays now.......

I hope their colour with darken to the Ah San's type. I ve already bought life insurance for this couple!

Father yellow is the 1st plavce winner lor![courtesy of sam awyeong]
Mother yellow is from Ah San[ out of red line ]

You shld have seen the rest of the spawn...pouuuccrrrr!!

Hmmm, will be bringing in more yellows to work into my current line which is less than 9 mths old.

This Thai seller is asking for the sky, or asking me to swap opaques with him.....heads or tails?

Dr Hsu
8th August 2002, 11:30 AM
If it's the guy on aquabid, then I think it would be worth it to get the line - looks pretty decent, at least for a young fish. Swapping some opaques may be the way to go as he is asking for the sky!

Don't want to pay $100 so I'll wait for you to get them and then I'll get a F1 from you

This bloke wanted some reds from me as well. Said his red n white lines crashed due to inbreeding. Was cautioned by Atison before that I need to exercise some caution!

BTW Hsu, I really dont know what to do with good old copper imbellis. U can have it back hes fatter/bigger now.

I will be breeding up to 10 new spawns this n next week before I go oversea in Sept. So got no more space for brother copper.

We have been talking on this topic Breeding Yellows but how many ways can Yellow be derived from besides Yellow x Yellow?

Chris Yew

Foo Hong
8th August 2002, 04:59 PM
Yellow is in the deepest layer of colours for bettas. To what I know, its either
yellow x yellow
or red[yellow geno] x yellow

some cam reds could appear here n there along with the yellows, unless yr yellows are pure.

Dr Hsu
8th August 2002, 07:05 PM
I got a few yellows out of an orange spawn, but not the desirable yellow color.

Chris got yellow out of MG (yellow chiffon) which has really nice color (if you ignore the variegation of the fins) - so how, Chris, can you line breed and isolate out the yellow? would be real nice!

Foo Hong - can return to me. Maybe later can auction off later if I don't need him.

Out of the whole MG spawn, onli these 2 DTM Yellow Chiffon are the best. The rest are not true yellow (exclude the variegation of fins). I've tried to spawn these 2 DTM with Peter yellow STF (now left back with 1 STF) numerous times but failed. Both male being DT have difficulty in wrapping up the female. They seems to have very 'stiff backbone' and cannot bend much, lol!

Now I'm doing a lot of reading up and doing a 'thesis' on how to manually assist in spawning your bettas! Should be able to try it out next week.

Yes, those DTs can be difficult to spawn due to the short body, spinal defects. May be easier to do so when they are younger?

Suggest you can try with a much smaller and young female, ideally not too fat from eggs or have pot belly.

May have some small size yellow oranges if you want to try them.

Bought a yellow HM betta from a Thai[breeder A] but thought he was breeder B instead . Had agreed with B that he ll sell me female as well if I buy male of his. Now A does not have females for me .

Now must look for other ways ...... cambodian female x Yellow male .

Say, for all my dealings in red crosses, I ve never paid any attention to percentage of cam Reds and Yellows out of extred x extred crosses. Errr, according to the stupid Mr Mendley, if I cross

Yellow x CamRed(from a Ext Red x yellow )....I should technically get 50/50 cam red/yellow yeah? Who studied Genetic Engineering in School?

Sudden yellow fever among a few of us.

Sebas, think I discuss my spawn before. Threw out 50% red fins light body (I dun call it cambodian as I dun think it's cambodian anyway)... 1st of all, I would think my pair one of it came from a orange spawn which occassionally threw out yellowish fish. As such, crossing with another will likely to fall back on the original strain.

Now got to look at Sam's yellow line and see if there is a chance that I could get some to work on mine line. Seems like not a lot of people working on yellow ct ... real tough for me to find.

I hate pineapple which has the black scale edge. Tried but culled all the fish. I am trying to work on a clean yellow line. quite siong.

Sebas, I got hold of someone yellow ct but the blue irids really tough to get rid unless thru a few generation of work. I got a spawn of a thai yellow male and this local female to see what's the result. Got to wait liao. Both near 170deg spread, color of male is pretty good. cross fingers & toes. Seldom see Jung leh. Anyway, if it is not too troublesome for you, 4x8 cubes hikari bw, i take a box first. If you have only the 4x6 type, then I no need liao. ming pai hor ? Oh ya, you have frozen mosquitoes larva or live bloodworms as well ? erh .. shift this worm topic to your farm channel ok ?

Wonder how Peter Choo got his yellow (japs) and Chris' chiffon.

Kenneth,

As far as I know, Peter got his yellows through personal hand-carry by his sister from Japan, and Chris' yellow mainly thrown out from his MG (thus the strong yellow color).

If you need a yellow CT male, let me know - I have one you can use for breeding first as I'm too busy with other spawns at the moment to breed him.
