View Full Version : Buying Plakats In Bangkok

Hi,
For pple that have been to BKK recently and particularly the Chatuchak market ... is there any good buys? I mean betta.
I am thinking of getting my fren in Thailand to help me do some purchase ... but he is not familiar with bettta ... thus not thinking of asking him to get long tails like Delta and HM. So thinking that he might be able to help me to get a few plakats back.
Any suggestions for plakats? What do they have there at Chatuchak? What is nice? What do they specialise in? Black? Extended Red? Yellow? Opaque? Marble? Thinking of these because pure colour are probably easier to choose compared to multis and probably by getting the more expensive ones will provide some qulaity to some extend.
Any advice is good ... and thanks in advance ...
With Best Regards,
Samuel Phan

Sam,
My advice is to go there yourself! Since your friend is not famaliar with bettas, he can get conned easily and even if not, may not bring back the fish that you'll like......so, better to keep your friendship!:)
Chatuchak is an experience in itself so worthwile just taking a trip to see the monstrous market - your gf (or is it wife?) can shop and shop till she drops while you just spend time at the fish section <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hi Dr Hsu,
This fren is a close fren ... even get back lousy fish also friendship intact lah. =)
But thot that the price there not too expensive so ask him to bring back a few as samples.
Anyway ... was there last Dec and was not interested in Plakat then but saw a big store selling only Plakats ... quite impressive.
Shall see if BCS will have the June outing to BKK or not ... if not I will make my own trip there soon.
Thanks for your advices ... and Foo Hong too.

Hmmm .. I was there last year but din see the fighting cock section???
Only remember seeing a lot of pet shops that sells rabbits and dogs ... then birds.
Then somewhere around that area ... the fish shops. =)
Koi, Chiclids, Platty, Goldfish ... everything they also have.
Then finally see the betta shops. Only afew ... less than 10 shops.
Is this the place??? tthe betta central???

Wrong place! Need to walk around the periphery of chatuchak - the fighting cocks (and also fighting plakats) are on the side of the road squashed against the fence of chatuchak. Walk along the stretch and you will see exits - which are the entrances to the fish section!

Oops ... u mean there are a lot more betta shops there?
May I know about how many shops are there????
Was there a Chatuchak for 2 consecutive days and thot that is the only few betta shops there. But was told that chatuchak only operates on weekends ... but was also told that there is anther place nearby with lots of LFS that opens through-out the week.

So Sam, do you plan to buy some plakat back? How cheap is it? When is your friend going up?

Hi Chris,
My fren is currently in BKK and will be coming back on 8 May.
But still comtemplating whether to trouble him or not. =(
Anyway ... in BKK ... plakats may be more expensive than deltas because they use these fighters for gambling ...
Saw 1 shop that sells only plakats and all their fishes were housed in tall glass containers like what you see in Artisan's web-site. The price are not that cheap actually ... about 150 Thai Bhut upwards.
But of cos ... this is 6 months back ... Foo Hong and Dr Hsu might be able to provide better updates.

After hearing what you said about the Plakat Male x HM Female thing, I'm tempted to explore with some pure solid colour Plakat Male like Blue, Red and White. What about you?

Quite tempted too ... but not so easy to find in Singapore. Even Straits do not have Extended Red Plakats. They have mostly marbles ... and some yellows. And I remember they used to have blacks too.
But dun think I will stock up too many of them ... now got to think where to find a tank to house all my female breeding stocks.
Housing them in individual containers can be tiring. =P
Lazy ... that is all. =)

Dr Hsu,
So can I assume that the Blue Mask coloration was retained in the spawn?
I also have a Blue Mask CT Male that I hope to spawn to improve its finnage. I am trying to either pair with another Blue Mask CT Female or a Pastel ST Female (to retains its shine and for better finnage since it has very good finnage). Now might even consider Royal Blue HM Female.
But this spawn will wait since the male is not too ready yet at 2 months plus. Also the Blue Mask CT Female is pretty young too. =P
Dun want the male to kena rotan.

Just came back from a company trip in Bangkok. Went to Chatuchak and bought quite a few pairs of betta. Mostly imbellis.
2 pairs Copper
1 pair White Gold
1 pair Blue
1 pair MG Plakat
And some guppies!
Cost me around SGD100 in total.
Didn't really see much good CTs or HMs. A lot of cambodian multis.

Was there recently ... you can find really cheap bettas but have to say that good plakats dun come easy and cheap even in Bangkok.
Even when you can find any that are real competition grade ... they are either sold or not for sale. ;)

Now with Air Asia offering $50 Singapore-Bangkok flights, looks like it would be more accessible for Singaporeans to obtain their dream bettas from Thailand. My advice? Forget Chatuchak, go to the fish farms directly.

Hi Myron,
It may take quite a few days to visit as most fish farms are normally far and between.
For tourists, better to try your luck at Chatuchak unless you are there in BKK solely for betta hunting.
Cheers!

[ag]Myron , So you are tempted to go.
The experiences , itself worth the trip( Chachusak market).
ITs a hugh place for all kinds of pets(not only bettas). If you like animals then you can,t miss the place???????go go go
Prices here for bettas , are not cheap. Be prepare to pay from $1000 baht upward for good quality fishes.
Buying bettas...Just for your infors..
Airticket($50.00, like what Myron had said).Yes its valued for money but the others cost.. hotel stays , transport and times.
If you are visting farm(if you can find):D.$2000.00baht a day for taxis[B)], to bring you to any farm(easily 4 hrs away, to and fro, take a day).Might be able to get some nice and cheaper??? bettas but, don,t forget the others cost////[eb] Think better off , buying here from Bettas World.[8D]FOr the TRip(visit to farm) , its worth the money but just for buying cheaper bettas.... No???
Another problem(happened to us), after the happy buying????? HOw to bring (smuggle) them back. Many ingenious ways of doing it. Maybe , these are parts of the fun..ha ha.
some used Aqua bottle(fish inside), packs in bag then check in.Some even better,Have heard some guy , buying a cooker(electic), then packing the fishes inside the cooker, then checking in the lot...ha ha So what your ideals....
Myron , if you are going , We are in [bx](Edwin , Vicent [:P], Dr Hsu and myself , ah Also SAm And company:D.Don,t worry about the fishes part , we can bring them back for you . ... that is a garantee i can give.. ha ha ..sis...ss.[cr] only for you , ha ha.:)

Why not visit those Farms near Bangkok? Within 100KM of Bangkok have lots of Fish Farm although many of them are not big fish farms.
And if anyone's going to Chatuchak, help me buy Betta Imbellis from one shop there... hehe

i love chatuchak market. my wife's family lives soo close to it too. i was there in june of 2003 and spent the day wandering around. i don't recommend going the day after you arrive like i did because i was soo jet lagged and still trying to get used to the weather (canada isn't that hot). sadly, when i went i wasn't into bettas like i have become and i missed out on all the plakat action, if only i had known then what i know now. oh well, we hope to make the trip down in the near futuer. i better bring alot of money because there are a lot of betta related items i want to get that are just hard to find up here in the north.
