A main tank for spawning should be readied. Recommended tank sizes vary, with most commonly used ones about 1ft by 1ft in breath and width. Height should be about ? to 1ft high. Again, smaller or larger tanks have been used successfully, based on personal preference and experience.

Within the main tank, a smaller floating container should be used. Another alternative is a jar that sits within the tank, but with the top of the jar higher then the surface of water in the tank. The male will then be placed into the main tank, while the female goes into the jar.

This allows the male and female to see one another, while there is no contact between them. Initially, the male and female will actively flare at each other. After a period of time, some females may actually lose their colors and show horizontal vertical bands across their bodies
