As long as you have a tank with decent size (able 2ft) and some under-gravels and clean water.
Corys dun die that easily. I tink I still have about 20 corys now in my 4 ft tank together with my angels. Some of them are probably more than 2 years old in my house already.

Most corydoras stay in soft water. I have a video showing cory natural environment which is highly oxygenated and very clean. Guess where in Amazon has such environment .... white water. Yup, they stay under rocky river bank where high water flow. I still got 2 leopard corys in my tank. They are 4 years old liao. lovely small creature.
But I am keeping them in hardwater.

ph 8.2 kh 4.0 but they are from my planted tank once but after i dismantled the tank, they are slowly conditioned to such water. So best dun just dump in cory at such drastic change.

For any freshwater fish, it's best to keep between 6.5 to 8.5 level for some reasons. Never go below 6.0 for a filtered tank setup and above 8.5 is a not recommended ( tough to maintain ). Better not go into so detail.
Just provide large water vol, good hidding place and clean water for corydoras. If I not wrong, some pleco are hardwater fish and the price for these pleco is much higher than those softwater types. Tio bo har ?

sometimes i also have cories dyin 4 no apparent reason...
think its the sudden change of environment...
find that they're rather delicate when it comes to environmental shocks

Sigh...one of my bristle nose plecos found dead this am.....:(
Just saw it yesterday and looked fine....maybe my hungry fries decided to hassle it too much (didn't feed them much yesterday).
Well, it's back to Gan Aquarium next week......says he has a bunch of plecos coming in next week!

wun d plecos eat up ur fries?
Dr Hsu
23rd February 2003, 08:24 PM
No, these are vegetarian for the most part. With lots of algae and plants, they will be pretty happy. If they do eat "meat" then they will just take up the left overs, if any!

The common plecos are ugly, but the nice ones are really beautiful, even when large

Corydoras would definitely do well in a well oxygenated tank.
Depending on the types of Corydoras specie, a 1 gallon may be too small unless we are talking of the dwarf, such as C. pymaeus, C. hastatus, C. habrosus.
Just to clear some probable misconceptions, fishes from South America hails from rivers of very varied water parameters, black water (lowest pH even to pH of 2-3 in Rio Negro), clear water and white water (highest pH).
For plecos and corydoras, it would be good to QT the fish upon purchase as these armoured catfish would carry lots of bacteria, parasites. When stress, such bacteria/parasites would attack the fish resulting in casualties.
One thing to note: some of these fishes are rather sensitive to salt, so do add them carefully. A medication good for relieving the stress of these fishes would be waterlife myazin.
