I think shld get diff people to talk. someone who only solely works blue.
I am jack of all colours.....kekeke. currently working my butts out on red, white n blacks.....at same time still trying to keep the other lines going.
Doesnt mean one has to have a very successful line to talk here. We can share what we went thru n where we went wrong so others can learn!

Lesson Number One from Derrick: Humility, which would cause one to continue asking and experimenting, because never believe that you have "arrived". Be constantly on the lookout for improvements to your line.
So what is lesson number 2? :D

Maybe to help the process along...Derrick, could I ask what you look out for when you select your breeders for the blue line?

Myron , ok weill try . I think its all personal likings.First :colour, second:finnages and balances(finnages and body).Personally , i like my caudal ,like axe head type(curve outward).understand from fh ,they are atison ,s genos(fish).I find most will turned sd at least if water conditions are kept to thier liking.
Right now , i have a spawn of turquios(15 weeks) ,kept only 15 pcs(from 500 pcs),rest with my couson,s aro belly).two almost hm or..maybe...big dorsai , long anal, like "mirror image", axe head caudal(over 180 deg) but not straight line.body and finnages ,very well balanced, colour ..good. yeah , how to attach pics here , somebody help???.Or maybe safe your comments for the house visit.Only problem , i find ,those with this axe head caudal alway have thin body, that make them very difficult to breed (i have problem with my totoro ,s male).

Actually Atison is the father of most irids HM in Thailand. He even sold to Japan long ago and thats why some Jap fishes resemble Thai.
My lines also carry about 25% of Atison's progeny.
The only thing I still dont like with many thai fishes is the 'rays' sticking out, esp in the anal fins. Colour wise and fin volume in some are pretty good.

Foohong,If you had read ATISON,S STORY ,you will realised that he actually sytarted with a few pairs from his japanese friend ,long ,long ago. then its goes full circle.
Long time ever toch on this thread. ok , where am i.oh , re my turquios , i have to thank sam awyong , for pointing out to me(underfed my fishes). After loading them up , they shown hm already, bred two pairs alreasdy.. hopefully ,will be able to get fries like the parent.
right , i m also running totoro lines(three actually), tk lee totoro , japan direct ,totoro and saichon.
tk lee totoro....find these fishes , colour ..mostly laced and balance ..good. high %of hms. Also found ,the female(laced) carried black and alway produce good spawn when bred to any average fishes.(only the laced not the blue).
japan, totoro...male tended to be thin and weak , very difficult ,to breed them . So far only managed three spawns from this lines .But have quite a good havest with the females with other male.finnages from this line, tend to produce over hms fries. i haven,t get any yet but already havested quite a nos. of hms. will be bringing a few to the exhibition. Also young steel(6weeks)that show hm finnages.yeah, the females ,s finnages also very good.
Saichon... i don,t know ,how many % of totoro genes in this line.the finnages and balance is excellent. the % of hm from this line ,alsoi very high. i managed to get lot of hms.one different, this line from other , i belived is, the body shape and sizes.the body is thick(some ppl said ,its well fed but i don,t overfed my fish)And also the finnages to body ratio is about 3/4 :1,small finnages compare to other.when young , they actually look like "plakat"(short tail).will be bringing some as exhibits.only problem , i find this line is , its carried a little yellow gene for thge turquios(yellow washes on some fishes)also understand from other, they also throw some yellow in the spawn(can,t confirm yet, don,t know wheather its pastel or yellow).BUt for my spawns , i got only turquios from turquios....

Derrick,
Oh is it? kekekeke. Anyway Japs also got from the west [US & Europe initially ]. Ai Ya so anyway its just a big merry go round. Actually it doesnt matter where the stock originate from. I find that if you manage it well they will be good, managed badly it will deteriorate. Just like cooks. Everyone uses more or less same ingredients for making Chicken Rice. But why do some Chicken Rice taste better? Bcos of the cook! Irregardless of where he bought the chicken from.
Roti Prata, laksa, Char huay teow also the same [eb]

Personally, I think that the next thing that all should be working on for the irids lines to get the head the same colour as the body. Otherwise, it is strictly not a solid colour!!!

jonathan , is the steel from me. you can have some more (to breed, with conditions). i will be away for a while and i m not breeding this line. So you can breed them but give me back some offsprings when i come back(away for 3 weeks).Might not be right for competition(timing is right i hope).can only breed my fishes end july or mid august.right now lot of hms(totoro ,saichon, etc etc..red,white ,black, marbled ,butterfly and the blues, plakats, imbellis(gold with no washes)).

Thanks Myron,
Don,t know to continue as totoro(details), clean colour and long anal (curtain like
)but when "they" flar, will form a round circle. When not flaring , the anal do look longer then caudal. That,s the style of totoro.
When i got the original breeders, they are thin and very long bodied fishes . most males , very defficult breeder. have to try and try ,for many times before successful in spawning.
ah... sigh , my white (opaque),tried since octerber last year , only managed two spawns , around april....also...can only bred to other(saichon and foohong female)...but they look very promising......colour like father , with a green gloss type and vey very clean, not a drop of others colour.will show pics when available.

When a young betta growing up together with its siblings is matured enough, it starts tearing at its siblings. As this is deemed undesirable (since we are talking about show bettas which are admired for their long flowing untorn fins), we would need to separate the male bettas and place them in jars. Hence the term "jarred" bettas.

anyone knows the name of this kind of betta? or are they saichons? one of my fellas resemble Derrick's fella DSCO3710 i've one of these gotten from a friend.. he has a box of these from a small spawn.. can't recall what he used to breed with. however, many of the fellas from this batch is pretty successful in the colour turnout and finnages. in fact, some i've seen turns out to be close to HM (as in close to 180 degree caudal spread)

Oh , i actually bred my saichon turquios male to dr Hsu mask female(cross between imbellis x hm type). To get mask is not defficult but to get mask hms , that is the challenge.racing with dr hsu... who comes first ..ha ha.
note : i got my mask type(delta) six month back. Now i m hoping , some will turn out hms from this spawn.( they have the same characters as saichon young fries, at this stage).

The moral of this story is that you cannot overdo increasing ray splits. It will break the caudal pattern and create a flower petal like caudal. Hence everything has its limits.. so no 36 ray splits..

Its easy. Just start from any one primary ray at the caudal fin's base, and see how many times it splits.
E.g. primary ray - primary splits (into 2 rays) - secondary splits (into 4 rays) - tertiery splits (into 8 rays). So a betta with tertiery splits means that EACH primary ray splits three times, so at the end of the caudal you see sets of 8 rays originating from each primary ray.
Another e.g. a DDR Crown tail has secondary splits - 4 rays at the caudal edge.

Point well taken and noted. I have always advocated that we should not have too much branching or splits. Actually, some HMs have been developed with minimal branching!

Hi Myron, i think if you can find photos of blues taken with flash, it will be even better. Because the outer rim of the finnage of the turquoise u've posted looks like royal blue.

Great mask deltas. Think they have some way to go but the line seems to be moving in the right direction. Hopefully soon unmasked blues can only be found in the history books.

I have a question. Take a look at most Blue/Turq/Steel HMs today. Most have a white trimming on the edge of the fins. Is this the result of marble genes or butterfly (vf)?

Not the good ones, such as the fish by Sarawut above. :D It is the existance of variegated fins gene and is common in the red and non-red lines as well.

Lyon,
considering the age of the betta (yap, that one you just bought :D), there is a high possibility that the colour will play "catch-up". have discussed this with Annie before. not unless, as Myron mentioned, these contain variegated genes. but if you look at Sarawut's winning fish in more micro detail, the ultra-fine lining can still be detected. but i do not think it kills off the beauty of the fish.
