Q: Can I pair a larger female to a male? And vice versa?

A: Good pairings usually consist of females paired with males that are slightly larger. In the case where a female is the larger of the two, the male may have problems curling around the female during the spawning process especially when the female has good width and a very heavily laden egg sac.

A good female to male body length ratio would be about ?:1. Again, it is only a guideline, and consideration must be given to fish that have a deeper body (read: wider from top to bottom body length). This is especially so in the case of doubletail bettas, where wider widths and shorter body lengths than normal singletail bettas have to be considered.
