View Full Version : Spawning Guppies

They are live bearers, so the female can be much bigger than the male. This is even more fun. You can actually manually spawn them by putting that 'thing' into the female. Usally put 2 males and 1 female in the spawning tank.

Any guys out there that can give some pointers on guppies?
e.g.
- The selection criteria?
- breeders selection?
- breeders conditioning?
- male:female ratio?
- fries separation?
- species differentiation?
- etc.
Thanks In Advance ...

Sam, my uncle in-law mentioned something about conditioning by feeding solely on bloodworms. I have no idea, but he is a friend of JJ, whom i heard is keeping some very nice guppies. Maybe you can approach him for pointers.

hehehe ... okie. :)
But would appreciate more info here for all to share ...
Heard that some pple will separate the fries to male and female tank at the age of 3 weeks to avoid the female getting pregnant by poor quality males. Thus only the pre-selected males gets to pair up with the quality females to produce the next generation.

Guppies? Saw some very cool strains in Thailand. probably from IFGA lines.
My fathers friend used to[think still is] rearing guppies. They feed pig heart and daphnias. So many fries. feel like keeping some to feed bettas.
Sam, your Red spawn already.....waiting to dish out the fries.

In the guppy trade ... again ... the nice females command high price.
Lots of culling in the process of getting the perfect form.
After some reading ... seems like it is about the same effort as betta keeping ...
the only advantage is that they dun fight and can be kept together.

But not the prized males right? You keep them separate as they fight, which could result in nipped fins right? Or maybe it is just the other fish in the community tank I have at work and at my in-law's place.

I am not sure ... I always thought that guppies dun fight.
Although they chase around but normally not damaging ...

- Use aged water
- PH 6.8 to 7.6 (7.0-7.2 is preferable)
- The temperature should be between 75 & 80 degrees F (guppies 0-4 months 78-80, 5-8 months 75-77, 9-12 months 72-74).
- BBS for fries
- Male guppies should be separated from the females at about 4 weeks of age.
(PS: This must be done as the smallest and fastest male of the lot can fertilize the females and ruin your stock.)

Yeah.. Good ... Got guppy thread.
Hahahaha:D
Ok.. Males do nip at each other and especially when you have 2 males and 1 female.. ( Try it to believe )
Another way.. is to place 1 pair of guppies together for a long period of time..... and then add another female.. ( the females will fight )
Females that are separated for a period of time to drop their fries..... become fierce when you re-introduced them back to their community tank..
The strains I have are moscows, blue grass, medusa, snakeskins and a variety of out-cross..
... and shit to my father's luohan... cause that guy actually parachuted into my moscow tank last night and ate all my adult males and females..[bm] ( wonder why the fries were left alone.. )
Shit to it man..![dt]
Anyway.. I took back the tank.... no more hotels for luohan. :(
Yeah.. Foo Hong is right... Thailand really have alot of nice guppies.. No kidding..! But you got to be real careful when choosing.. or else the snakeskin female you have.. might throw you blue-tuxedos and a pair of albinos ( with prehit female ) might throw you 100% black-eye spawn. Sigh! [xx(]
Different countries..are good in different strains..
The Americans have very good tuxedos.
The Thais have good blue/red grasses.
The Japanese have good medusa/swallow tail or ribbon tail.
well... Singaporeans are known to have the perfected snakeskin..
Seperate males from females..during f1, f2, f3 spawns.. to ensure that the guppies can breed-thru.. Do so..also if you want to show the males.
Different strains have different viability... Make sure that you put them back together ... before they come impotant..
Moscows.. for example.. mature faster than the rest.. hence you need to put them together.. before they run out of .. " gas "

Nice ...
Have a few spawns of albino and blue moscow.
Now running out of tanks to separate them when they reach maturity ...
Gotta separate the males from females when they are 4 weeks or lesser rite?

Hi
Sam...
Different strains mature at different rate... Hence what I will suggest is that you observed for the sign of gono podium..Once spotted... remove them..Experience plays a part here.. You can note that the frys will start to have their anal fin sharpen up..Remove them immediately.. Another way.. is to observe for colouration..
This shows that it is a male..

Okie ... will look out for the "gono podium" thing.
Was hoping to rely on daily observation and keen eyes to help me with the identification of the fries.
Seems quite a hassle to keep good guppies too ... almost the same as betta except the jarring portion.
