Just wondering what the HM owners add to their tap water in caring for their prized HMs. Diana from Straits Aquarium told me that she only allows something to soften the water and nothing else.

the USDollar leaves lah...what else?
They use water aged in a cement pond, which is the best.

Personal Opinion: To date I believe FooHong is one of the very few breeders in Spore who managed to produce HMs consistently.
Instead of guessing and spying on what Straits Aquarium does, why not we ask Foo Hong on his method of water conditioning? While genetics plays an important role of producing HM offsprings, I believe water condition is important as well.
Foo Hong, teach us lah.... LOL :-)

Heh.....**** Koon. have I met you before [ag]
Thanks for the praises but I cant take it any more ///am fainting [dr]
There are a lot of people out there who also can, if not previous, now produce HMs in acceptable probabilities. In fact, I am a lazy bumb when it comes to conditioning water. I used to have tubs of water ageing overnight until my neighbour tough I am bathing in the outdoors...[cr]
I add water straight from the tap with the fishie inside the jar. as the water is being topped up, the necessary dechlorinator is added so that the water mixes it. Ketapang is added...depending....on whether I remember or not......[pf]
I dont think water is very very major altho it is one key element. More importantly is try not to let yr fishes fall sick...this to me is very important.

No lah...still have no chance to meet you. Anyway, shocked to read about yr method of water conditioning. All this while, thought that HM breeders are very particular about water conditions. Maybe I have to throw away whatever mental notes that I have picked up when come to this subject and re-learn again.
May I know what brand of anti-chloro you use? No salts added?

No salts. Am not keeping marine fishes.
I have used Tetra, Sera, Seachem, wardley. I never used some asian brands cos I dont trust what is on the label.

This one was another cool thing which some people asked at roadshow.
"WOO SEE ME SIAN TAN AA SAI CHO 'HM'? (Any miracle stuff to produce HM)
ME: Boh lah! (none)
"KETAPANG LEAF HO MEH?" ( Is ketapang leave good )
ME: buay pai lah (not bad)
Next thing we knew, the entire box of free ketapang leaves was all snapped up in minutes! Should have charged 5cents per piece!

It is free if you pick up from the road side ... Singaporean are blessed with lotsa ketapang trees all around Singapore island.
Just know the tree well and look around your neightbourhood ... I am quite sure you will be able to find one near you.

It is imperative that you find out as much as you could about the water in which your prized halfmoon is brought up in. This is because you would need to reproduce the same if you are hope to maintain his finnage.

I am starting to think that running water through peat moss is a good step. My bettas have never been happier!

I've always heared that bettas doesn't have any demands for DH (hardness) but I'm wondering if that is a mistake. Here I'm living the water is very soft (0.1 dh). I'm wondering if calcium is important for stronger rays.
Peat moss filter makes an acid buffer right? A garanteed stabel acid enviroment is good I think.

Peat moss reduces the pH of the water, through a somewhat natural way. How this is an advantage over adding chemicals to the water, I would refer you to the following thread on pH:
