Bettas can be trained to accept dried foods such as flakes, pellets, and freeze-dried worms, as well as a variety of frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, beefheart, etc. Live foods are relished by bettas and are usually high in protein and fat content. Examples of some live foods commonly used are: tubifex, bloodworms, white worms, black worms, grindal worms, and microworms. However, note that live foods may contain high amounts of bacteria, which may cause your fish to fall ill, at times fatally. This can be avoided to a certain extent, by ensuring that the live foods are thoroughly washed and cleaned before being fed to the fish. Also, buying from a reputable source will help as well.

Most breeders will have their own way of feeding their bettas, which may vary greatly from one to another. Generally, people new to the hobby should feed their fish a variety of foods. As they grow in experience in betta keeping, they will understand the needs of their bettas, and change their feeding
