Bettas Splendens are labyrinth fishes, which allows them to take in atmospheric air through the water surface. As such, bettas may be kept in tanks without additional air or aeration being supplied, such as through air pumps, plants, water circulation, etc.
Behaviorally, males are fiercely territorial towards one another, while females are more gregarious. As such, male bettas must be housed separately, while females may be kept together.
Bettas are classified into two generic types: short tail and long tail types. Within these two generic types, bettas are further classified into different variants of their tail forms: veil tail, round tail, delta tail, and more; and their color forms: yellow, red, black, green, blue, white, and more. Again, bettas may occur with any of the tail definitions in both single tail and double tail form! These variations allow for many permutations of betta types to occur, and account for their attractiveness among hobbyists and alike.
Betta splendens to date have been developed such that their fins, color, and size have been enhanced and possess beauty beyond their wild counterparts. Many new colors and forms are constantly emerging, such as the present orange/purple bettas and the halfmoon tail type. However, how long these new variants will last or whether they will eventually grow into a fixed strain type, depend on the capabilities of the betta breeders and enthusiast.
