Hi Guys,
Is there any articles to show the quality of a crown tail? Or any 'Sifu' here can share regarding the things to look out for in a CT?
Thanks

I am not a CT guy ... so not much to contibute here.
But for what I know ... getting a good CT from a spawn is as difficult as getting a HM from a HM spawn.
A good CT IMHO ... should have thick and strong rays that are straight and evenly spaced out. The caudal spread must be at least SD equivalent if not 180 deg.
Some pple might go for multiple rays e.g. DDR, DDDR ... but to be frank ... a DR is probably the most beautiful CT. Look at a King crown ... it is only a DR ... anything more will spoli the beauty.
Water condition is very crucial for CT and a large tank will make the maintenance much easier ... e.g. 1 ft tank.
Having a small internal pump might also help to circulate the water and prevent ray curling ...
That all I have to share for now ...
With Best regards,
Samuel Phan

I was told, in Indonesia, the most imp thg judges pick are equal ray length, equal web length. So there is 2 circles [inner and outter ]u can draw. Rays shld be thick and straight, spacing btw rays must be even throughout. Other aspects similar to HM. Number of rays less critical compared to other features, King Crown being the most captivating!
BTW i am no CT guy also!

Seems like no many ppl in Singapore are into CTs ...

I am working on several spawn of ct, but to obtain a good one out of a single spawn is like touching the sky from 10,000 ft under the sea.
Other than the usual color, health and composition of the fish, the rays is the next to score points.
The Ray not just for caudal fins, but also for dosal and anal.
Ray split evenly spread. ( not for dosal )
Protruding rays must be of equal length, the longer the better lah.
Web between the rays should be equal length
Thick, strong rays. No bending (except for a King Crown which the curl give it the majesty look )
For other types of rays split like duo, quad rays, all split must be the same, no such thing as some 2 some 4 some 3.
There is a criteria that I still not really understand. It's the web between the protruding rays. Foo Hong mentioned 2 circles, but on certain specimens, 3 circles.
To keep ct in our local tap water is not easy. Space required is much larger than other types.

I think it's juz like HM. First something basic like - do you think breeding a DRCT x DRCT will give you 100% DRCT? Given both the parents possess the best traits of a DRCT. Haha.

I think what Foo Hong meant is the eveness of the webbing from the body to the end of the webbing, ie the length of the webbing should be the same. The ray split after the webbing for DDR or more should split at the same point on the length of the rays. Thus creating the 'Circles'. Correct me if I am wrong ;).
Any suggestions on maintaining the rays in it prime condition?
Is color more important than having good finnage for CT? eg. Multi-color King crown as compare to DR melano with good finnage but not a King Crown.
I guess the difficulties in maintaining CT makes it not very popular in Singapore. However, I think it is good to have a guide line for CT like the HM, so that breeder will have a better idea of breeding good qality CT (IMHO).

How about the fierceness factor. The red one on the middle right section in Atison's website fierce enough?

Myron, the fierceness in photos and during the actual competition can be quite different. Some very fierce bettas that I know turn puny during competition. Stressed Out! But in judging bettas this should be one of the factors considering that we are dealing with fighting fish. No point having a top class HM or CT that cannot flare for long during the competition, as the judges cannot view the potential of the betta. Judging CTs are more complexed than HMs because of the different type of rays. They are categorised into random rays, DR, DDR, Cross Rays, Semi Cross Rays etc. Sad to say that I have not come upon a judge in Singapore that knows enough to be judging CTs.

Random ray means the branching ray are not the same...throughout the caudal
eg. DR in the first branching and DDR in second....etc
am i right Mr Ngo?

Guys don't give me too much credit. I am also still learning, don't deserve your praises yet! Anyway DR Double Ray means that its just two rays extended branching. DDR is double double ray hence a four ray extended branching. Random Rays basically means that the caudal spread has mixed single ray, two rays, 3 rays and 4 rays extended branching all mixed up. It is used to describe those whose extended ray patterns are not fixed.
