Importance of DT genes in ST lines

Is it true that one would require DT genes to produce the best ST lines? Reason this is an important question is because of the many faults found in DT lines as described on the following thread:

Understand that some of Totoro lines (as pictured below) are achieved without DT gene. (Derrick got any pictures of pure Totoro line to share?)
