females. I think the breeder girl shld be as nice as possible........kekeke....

since most of the time we wld normally not be successful in persuading breeders to sell us their phenols, we have to make do with whatever we have on hand. however, from my own obesrvations, u do not necessarily need a female if the following are in place[u cld have diff epxeriences]

1. the breeding partner male must be as perfect a HM as possible.
2. the female is preferably from a same line as the male and the line CONSISTENTLY THROWS HM in each spawn. ie sibling female.
3. She bears 1to4 ray splitting on the caudal, or better.
4. she has a minimum of 150 spread in the caudal base, and / or straight egddges thaat are at least 120 spread in caudal

The fish really look superb.

8 rays at the end, nice dorsal, nice anal and definitely nice caudal.

But at $100 ... I think I will work on my runt fishes from the HM X SD spawns ...
I might probably still hit the jackpot in creating a HM line.

Concur with Foo Hong's observation. My red spawn (with some HMs) did not have a HM mother.

Agree ... could see the light tinge on the anal protion that connects to the body.

But still it is one of the few best females I have seens so far.

And the best is she does not look like a typical runt fish at all to have that kind of finnage.

Thanks Myron ... have to agree that the fish looks great despite the slight/hidden/underlying red.

It has always been an ugly choice, finnage or colour![dr]

Maybe Markus can help us on this.

Also, what do we look for in the female (which is more often than not, the more difficult of the two partners to choose since the HM features and colour are less obvious in the shorter-finned, paler females)?

One aspect that I have not really paid much attention to: is there proportion in the fins of female bettas? I note that they rarely are proportionate (anal fin is usually too long). Anyone has a female betta with a nice proportion (finnage-wise)?
