This is one of the 2 mth old yellow HM fries. The size of spawn is approximately 120 pcs. The caudal only can reach 180 degrees occasionally. Most of the time still 170. Eggs were laid on the BW comp day 2 mths ago.

**** Wei,
this will not become a HM the reason being the outer edges are staggered, and not full straight edges. it's very clean and i'm sure the colour will intensify more given it's tender age.

Yes, I agree with Alex that this STM has staggered caudal edge. I use those fishes with bowed-out caudal edge to achieve more HM and improve HM caudal. Result... no know yet awaiting for my F3 to ready.
I don't happy with my yellow line as well. I will look for colour improvement especially those of nr2 line.

To increase yellow. Maybe it's an idea to cross with red HM that carries blond rather than cambodian.

Bobby,
The best yellow that I have seen are the yellows of pineapple bettas irregardless whether it's a ct, plakat or HM. The yellow is rich and intense but the only problem is the black scales that made those fish called pineapples.
To me, I believe introducing cambodian gene won't increase the intensity but reducing it. This theory is the same as reds as yellows are non-red.
I've came across some yellows with pinkish body. I believe that is due to cambodian gene.

Derrick,
Thanks for your encouragement. NBC is still a few months away and I still dont know how my fries will turn out to be. Even so, there will always be surprises. The standard is getting better each competition.[tx]. At this moment, I can only spot the potential ones. still no good HM yet. I'll see how they turn out to be end of next month.
I am taking care of them very well now..

The result was 100% red and about 5 pieces with red patch out of 50+ fishes.
I find the outcross intensify the red but too bad, many of them with black scales to their body. I don't use this outcrossed fishes. I've sold them at VT prices to the LFS. The picture taken is the last piece that i'm keeping.
This is the sibling to my red line,

The credits on the finnage must go to the person who created the parent's line, not me. These are my f1 only. Yes, I agree that the colour still have to be improved. I am trying to do that now. Hopefully can improve a little in a yr time.

I was disappointed to see that piece without a ventral. It headed straight away to breeding tank after victoria pointed out the missing ventrals.
Now I recall why this piece is without ventrals. I have a very small blk plakat spawn with every piece without ventrals. I mixed with the yellows when they are 1 month old. Maybe the because of that, the bacterias that 'eat up' the ventrals were introduced to my yellow spawn. Anyway, luckily this is the only piece without a ventral from the whole spawn.
Tough break indeed, but he's still a nice fish, will make a good breeder.

Alex,
I believe some of the shorter rays in a staggered caudal egde fish can grow long eventually. This piece has became a HM. :D:D That's why I jar almost all the males and I dont cull the fish if they are less than 3.5 months old...

Hi Kheng Lim,
Your pictures are beautiful. Can share share how you take such nice pictures. Examples are settings, lighting, set at macro?? I have been struggling with my Nikon Coolpix 3100. I get blur pictures or not so nice and the worse is lots of reflections. I tried with black background, worse, more reflections, white background, same. Nothing works. But your pictures are fantastic!! Need to learn from Si Fu [bt]

The first piece Kheng Lip has is actually one of the best in terms of overall. At this moment, I only keep a few equivalent ones and the rest are just good breeders, not neccessarily best in terms of overall. I may lose to him if we send to the same competition. hehee.. I am not a commercial breeder or home breed to sell. So Kheng Lip may be the first and the last person I release fish from that particular spawn. Just in case something happen to this line at my place, I still know who to look for. I have a feeling I could mix up spawns in the future because I am doing a few lines of yellows(thrown from reds) at the moment, which have better colour in terms of intensity.
Yes, my phototaking is lousy. Maybe the lighting (daylight fluorescent lamp) I use is too strong and made the fish lose their colour in the photos.
Another thing is I always can't manage to snap when the fishs are fully flare.
Stay tuned for the better coloured yellows (but I think the finnage wont be good)

For your camera, set to micro i believe everyone know this. Set the shutter speed to the highest. Normally i will place the fish beside windows inorder to get the natural sunlight. The best lighting would be sunny day, of cause not direct sun rays.
For the fish, you must know when will the fish going to be fully flare. Which means you have to snap the shot just before the fish flare to his fullest.

These 2 brothers are the only survivors of my first F2 spawn from velvet outbreak. If they were borned 2 weeks earlier, they may make it to NBC. I jarred them last Saturday. Waiting for their caudal to be 180 degrees.
Derrick....look at the dorsal. if nothing wrong with the caudal development, their next generation should be able to give u a run in Aquarama.

They are about 2 months plus. I will try to breed them with their mother next month because I dont have anymore female siblings left. Your yellows got 1st and 2nd in NBC. [gd]. hahaha... have to set the target to make them in the same league as your fish.
