Same thing happened to my betta ... some Opaques ... but other colours were also attacked.
Tried yellow powder but din seems to help.
But other than the swollen mouth .. the fish seems to remain active and eating ok.

a kind of bacteria. PP treatment.
can i ask a few questions here. dunno how to setup a survey on this.
1. did u use age water ? water source ?
if no, then ignore the rest.
2. wat did u add during aging of water ?
3. how and where do u store the age water ? type of container/water storage.
4. how long do you age the water ?

all aged in rubbish bin.....plastic type. usually less than a day with ocean free anti chloramine. not enough aging coz not enough space to put tank.

After Dr Fred's talk, now i add salt to age water. sometimes black water extracts. nothing more unless when treating with medicine enbloc or quarantine new fish. interestingly, my colleague has never used aged water at all, it is always fresh from the tap. but he still manages to spawn & breed them with no difficulties. if i'm doing a partial water top up to cover for evaporation, sometimes also use fresh water. wonder if anyone has done a "long term" study. but then with the fish surviving 1 to 2 years, it might not make a big diffence.

Ever seen old fishes that has got their mouth so swollen that their jaw seems to dis-locate and have difficulty in feeding?
I have an Opaque female that suffered from such symtoms ... culled her as she couldn't consumer any food.
Anyone care to share?

I ve a male that was blowing too much....bubbles..that is! I am not kidding. You can change his water everyday and when you return home, he has a new bubble nest. His jaw gets too tired?;) ,....Ok the serious bit.
Some males hit their mouth at the jar sides when over aggressive so may have injured themselves [^]. But in yr case, old age may well be the reason. Imagine yourself when u r 80 years old, not only will your jaw look too big, other thgs will as well :D

hi there,
recently i bought some imported dayak crowntails. when i got the female she had what looked like a cracked mouth but she continued to eat and look healthy. now 6 week later she hardly has a mouth, it has been eaten away. i have used melafix, pimafix, bactonex and protozin hoping to stop whatever is happening. nothing. there is no fungus to look at, no lumps, just the structure of the mouth has all but dissapeared.
and now it looks like she is succumbing to dropsy. so i will be culling her shortly.
does anyone have a name for this ailment as i have never seen it before.
cheers

I suspect that it could be a cause of injury to the mouth and secondary infection of the mouth after that. Guess the stress of moving to a new location was too much for her. My condolences.quote:Originally posted by Abbey Wilkins
Mel, I had a similar thing happen to my yellow DRCT girl, Tink.
I managed to get it under control on the outside after topcal application of mercurochrome, but it came back rather vigorously. It hadn't occurred to me at the time that the infection would also have been on the inside of the mouth.
I think the best way to treat this is early, and with oral antibiotics, perhaps mixed with food. Standard water treatments just don't cut it :(
I tend to agree with Myron as to how she got it. I'd suggest you grab some Tetracycline next time you are out. As you are importing from OS, you have to think that the bacteria that they come with are resistant to most medications that we use. We don't have yellow powder over here, so thats another weapon gone. Its annoying, but importing fish means importing bacteria too, and unfortunately we can't import the medications to take care of it. :(
I'm sorry about your girl.

my opaque is lively and eats. however i noticed the portion between his lips and his eyes, there seems to be a red line as though its a cut from a fishing line. sometimes its red sometimes its not but it appears to be going deeper as though it will cut right through till he has no mouth. it appeared only after spawning and hasnt gone away.
is this the mouth disease which you all are talking about? how can i treat it?

Hi my fish was excreting mucus and the floor is filled with white stuff bathed it with oxycure and its fine now. maybe this will also help with your fish problem since bother are external problems. or melafix which helps regenerate wounds and fins. or you could go to the aquarium and ask for specific medicine for mouth rot.

Dita.
treat him with yellow powder. Mine is exactly the same case, spawn and suffered from mouth rot. Guess its an infected injury. If yellow powder doesnt work, then if u want to risk it u can try mixing in some green powder. Suggestion only, no guidelines juz gotta risk it and try.
