Hello one and all,

There is an Aquarium Exhibition which will be held in Guangzhou soon, and yes! Bettas will be featured and there will be a competition.

The organiser CMP has released details schedule/entries forms on their Guangzhou event starting from the 9-12 Sep 2004. Benching in for the competitions would be on 7 Sep and judging would be on 8 Sep.

We have been very kindly offered a booth for the show, and would like to take this opportunity to gather figures for the people interested to go with BCS for the event. Please post here or PM me or Myron to consolidate the numbers.

Of course, we are always interested in show-casing/competing, we're currently talking to the organisers regarding consolidating entries/shipping details, etc to the exhibition. So wait for our good news!

For more details, please go to

http://www.aquariachina.com/index.asp?lang=en&site_id=1

and

http://www.ornamental-fish-int.org/data-area.asp?aid=11504&gid=5353

Thanks!!

BCS would be collating all entry forms and fish for this competition on behalf of CMP Asia. Each entry would cost S$20, inclusive of a one-way trip to China for the competition. Cheques should be made out to: CMP ASIA TRADE FAIRS PTE LTD. You may send your entries and cheques to: Secretary, Betta Club (Singapore) 70 Chartwell Drive, Singapore 558766. The closing date for submission of entry forms is 10 Jul. Fish should be sent to a location in Singapore that would be announced subsequently.

The reason why it is a one-way trip is because it does not make economic-sense to ship the bettas back. Bettas would be sold off in China, so please state a reserve price (minimum price that the fish should fetch) for each fish that is sent. BCS committee members would be on-hand to receive the fish when they arrive and sell the fish subsequently.

Entry Forms are available at this website: http://www.aquariachina.com/download/CompetitionForm.pdf

Dear Edwin and Myron

Is that possible to let us MBA/MBC to joint BCS in the Booth and if that is ok from CMP and BCS , we will summit our bettas for the competition and I will represent MBA/MBC to bench in the bettas .

Hi Leong,
Yes. We are planning a 4D3N Bangkok trip this Aug for club members.
looking at the weekend of 21&22. National Day weekend would be costly & difficult to accommodate as a group.
In the mist of getting quotations.

Hi Edwin,

Looking forward to the betta farm trip, and hopefully you can inform all members of the exact dates earlier so that those who need to apply for annual leave to join the trip can do so in advance. :)

Thanks, but the success in the CT section was on account of my partner Indrata from Indonesia. He played the crucial role of selecting and acquiring the CTs for the competition. My task was more to condition them and ensuring that they were fit enough to withstand the competition. Hence this was really a joint Indonesia - Singapore effort. We also need to cheer our Indonesian hobbyist for their participation and success as well. Joty, Widy and the INBS have all done well and supported the event. I think we should discuss participating in Indonesian organised events as well. Incidentally for those of you who knows me well, you would already be aware that I fly 2 flags and I am proud to be associated with both countries.

Hi everyone,

Long time no "see". Been a bit busy and also with computer troubles so have been off the forum for quite some time. Thought this would be a good opportunity to start revisiting the forum again.

Just thought I would say a few words about the competition:

There were two chinese and myself doing the judging - one of them is from the Guangzhou area whilst the other is, I think, from farther north.

In general there were some nice fish there although I would rate the overall standard to be a little lower than at the shows locally. I believe this is because of the relative newness of this particular competition, and also because of the fledging betta scene in China. They are perhaps a yr or two behind us but I can see the interest there, both from speaking to the two local judges and just judging from the public interest at the betta competition area. If this keeps up, they will become a force to be reckoned in the future.....

As for the fish, there were some really nice fish there. As usual, it was difficult to really seperate out the top fishes in each class. I think what made things a little easier for us, and also probably reduces biasness, was the (compulsary) use of scoring sheets - thus even the judges did not know the positions till they were tallied up by the organizers!

Unfortunately, quite a few of the fish were a little stressed out from the trip and did not really adapt well. We could see that they could have been real contenders for positions, but due to finrot, general lethargy and an unwillingness to flare, they were out of the running for prizes.

A final word on the Grand Champion: This fish was well deserving of the title - A very balanced red HM of good color and only a few minor faults...coupled with a real willingness to flare and a stamina to match - he was still flaring well when we left this afternoon - after 4 days of public display, camera flashes etc!

I only managed to get a very few photos due to our hectic schedule there...will post them maybe tomorrow....
