For those that don't already know, MBC will be holding their show on June 23 at the Penang Botanical Gardens.
That weekend, I believe, is also the weekend of the IBC convention in Florida.
Also in June should be a major show in Bangkok. I am in the process of getting more info on the show from Atison. There is some interest in the committee of organizing a trip to BKK for the show and a tour of Chatuchak and some farms. Stay tuned for more info and start saving!

Li Chieh

they have good of almost everything. Only their whites and reds are a little 'slow'.

Not only do they have quality, they also have quantities of quality. Even leading US breeders are buying breeding stock from them to breed for the coming IBC convention. If you think any of the bigger time local breeders have this much of bettas, I can tell you from what I know many Thais have 20 to 50 times in numbers. Lets say if we have a national competition every month, they will have no problem sending entries each time, and I can bet they will trounce us....sadly.

We need to adopt the Thais attitude.

Hi FH,

Here must clarify a bit, agree a bit, and disagree a bit...

Clarify: When you say they have good of almost everything... So far we have established: Irids (exceptional), Red, white (poorish)... As I see, their irid butterflies are good, melanos are ok, and they don't really have orange, green, purple, MG, good yellows, marbles... so what lines specifically are they good with?? (BCS members thinking of BK trip will be most interested).

Agree: We ARE being trounced! (But I'm working on changing that...:))

Disagree: We have to adopt their attitude. No... I think we are being trounced not because of attitude but because of scale/cost of production. One guy with couple of breeding tanks (even given 300+ jars...working to death) will never beat acres of concrete ponds and 50 man workforce... (Same for Indonesians and crowntails)...We have to fight them through superior knowledge... shared intellectual capital... (that's one of the reasons why I started the "Betta hobby in S'pore" thread)...

By the way, who are some of the Thai breeders you are close with? Atison, Xman? Maybe Wasan?

Hiya....yep yep yep its good to be specific. I just a bit lazy to type so much. And I do welcome and appreciate yr point of views[as long as you dont flame me...:)

Well Jung, I did get to see with my own eyes real fishes and also being sent pictures of some fishes before. A lot of them in Thailand will buy good lines at whatever price. I ve seen melanos with a full 180 caudal and 16 rays splitting[ not atison s lines], their reds colour is still unclean, mostly with blue at base of fins, esp caudal. finnage wise similar to ours, whites they have fishes with full 180 caudal too but never seen a white with perfectcolour, many has clear ends.

Yellows, they have Jack Lewin s lines which they named vanillas and can breed almost 180 caudals yellow fishes now, Irids they have over 180 caudals. Of cos , many fishes I saw were still young, but still it speaks alot of their progress.

Atison of cos is probably Thailands greatest, but so are many who had his lines, including teeruch Poparnich[who had good lines, eg from Gilbert], Tannin Bunnak[met him], Nithi Kietchai and Veerachai[ young fellas...sold them my reds and whites...mistake...ha!...no they are quite nice chaps]...they appear as bettachromax on aquabid, Sarawut and his brother[cant remember his name]....they are known as CTlover and Siamimbellis on aquabid....these 2 are big time players. I dont deal with Wasan or Sunpetch but I heard they also have tonnes of bettas.

Of cos we cant beat them by their shear quantity , yes we can still come in by sticking to quality, cos I also believe in some ways once you have too much quantity, it takes away some attention and you overlook a few good fishes... It may be worth knowing that many of them breed both HM and CT to attempt halfsuns and in the cos of it have a lot of 'hm' which are in fact not actually hm but they look good at a young age.

Am I contradicting myself?
